Manufacturing technology of Carboline


Carboline — is a unique ultrathin double-layer or multi-layer carbon nonwoven material for ultralight and dimensionally stable (non-deformable seeing the influence of temperature) constructions.

It’s an ultrathin tape made of high quality carbon fiber TohoTenax®, glued in several layers with different directions. Our technology makes it possible to equally expand carbon fiber 830 TEX, 24K (1K = 1000 monofilaments) up to 75 mm. The nonwoven material Carboline has all of the advantages of the unidirectional fabric composite. Equipment for gluing Carboline can be easily rearranged to perform special tasks of the customer, any laying direction and any number of layers are possible.

Examples of application of Carboline


This material is widely used in sandwich structures. Due to Carboline’s uniform structure the surface of part is smooth even without gelcoat


The reinforcement of unidirectional tubular structures made from diagonal Carboline layers makes them impact resistant, substantially without adding weight


Very small thickness of the monolayer (from 0,014 мм) makes it possible to create the symmetric packages for dimensionally stable structures with a thickness of 0.05 mm. Good results were obtained by the use of Carboline body parts in solar panels of satellites.

Advantages of Carboline


• Rectilinear fiber without bends in the intertwining field increases strength and makes product dimensionally stable when the temperature changes.
• In the dry form Carboline does not stretch and crumble into filaments, providing a precise cutting of even the smallest parts.
• The multi-layer material can be made with any fiber direction and the minimum thickness of the monolayer 0,014 mm (12 g/m²).
• Reinforcement can be made of one or more Carboline layers and can be positioned in places on a sheet according to your outline.
• Carboline can be combined with the unidirectional fabric (120 g/m²) according to your outline.
• Carboline is manufactured in sheets of 3100×600 mm. It is possible to manufacture a smaller sheet according to your outline to reduce surplus.

Opposite (mirror) direction of the layers in stacking


There are a direct +45/-45 and opposite -45/+45 layings of the layers. In order to avoid the deformation of parts when the temperature changes, if the thickness of part is less than 5 mm, we recommend to use the direct laying from the one side, and the opposite from the other side.


If the length of part is smaller than the width of Carboline sheet, cutting of parts is possible with the direct and opposite layers direction of a single sheet.

Types of fibers used


Carboline is made from TohoTenax.
• High strength fiber — IMS65.
• High modulus fiber (HM) — UMS40.
• Average modulus fiber — HTS40.
